How to Run GTA 4 On GeForce 8400 GS

Warning - This tutorial uses overclocking to run GTA 4. Overclocking will usually void the manufacturer warranty for your Video Card. Hence if you don't want to void your warranty of take any damages (by chance) then I urge you to not carry out this method. I take no responsibility for any hardware damages.

Two days ago I wrote a post about the performance of Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA IV) on GeForce 8400 GS

I get an ugly 12 fps and hence I was not able to play the game like all others. The satanic idea of overclocking flicked my mind today so I thought to break the warranty of my 2 month old video card today. To my goodness it worked !! I now get a 22 fps which is enough for me to play the game. Normally a human eye can read up to 16 frames a second so anything more than 16 fps will look normal, so you dont need to wait for 30fps to play the game.

The card is performing almost good with no extra cooling unit required. The temperature of my video card normal ranges between 55-60 °C. Overclocking didn’t affect a lot with current temperature at 64 °C after playing the game for 2 hours. FYI its summer over here and the room temperature is 35 °C.

Okay, install the latest drivers and ntune utility. Now reboot your PC. There’s some overclocking action next.

Go to Start > All Programs > Nvidia Corporation > Nvidia Control Panel > Performance

overclock-1

You get to see something like this hopefully

overclock-2

Click on Adjust GPU Settings on the left panel

overclock-3

Now you get the the over clocking settings on the right. Make the settings like this (thats what I made), don’t make them too high or you might end up burning your video card.

Click on Custom frequencies

Set the Core Bus at 585 Mhz

Set the Memory Bus at 465 Mhz

overclock-4

Click on the test button

Wait for a while till the test is performed. Once the test is successful, click on Apply.

overclock-5

Hold on its not over yet. Now click on Launch Nvidia Monitor Utility.

overclock-6

Frequently keep an eye on your card’s temperature. Launch the game and enjoy.

  9. Atif says:

hi abs, I think its a problem with your cooling system. Who is the manufacturer of your card? XFX ? EVGA ? or any other? XFX usually not give fans to low end cards.
Mine is Sparkle with a fan and pretty much heat sink.

  10. Hi,
Im too scared to do it myself cuz im an amateur and i dont want to destroy my pc. I am using Rivatuner.

  11. Atif says:

well, if you are scared, I suggest you not to try this one because it breaks the warranty as well.

  12. gamernaveen says:

I tried doing what you did , but when I do a test , it says test failed. Any ideas on how to proceed?

  13. Atif says:

yeah, mabe your card cannot handle that frequency.. What manufacturer is it ?

  14. Sijmen says:

WOW! I got a raise from 540/500 (Core/Mem) > 702/593 (A raise of 30%/19%!) And still max 69 degrees Celsius (156.2 degrees Fahrenheit (love google)). Only once in 60 secs, I see a little artifact in heavy burn programs

Im not sure why? My motherboard literally caught fire 2 weeks ago. Checking out the specs of the Mobo, I have a quad core processor and its an LGA775 type. I had 8 GIGs Ram 3TB worth of my 2 HDD and I had an ASUS/NVIDIA video card at 1GB. I also had a sound card and another 1000MG LAN PCI. I basically have all the hardware down. I just want to learn more advance things like coding ect all that hardware is petty. One day I opened a computer case not knowing what one thing was on the motherboard and now i basically have it mastered. I just want to know how to program like writing my own websites and programs.

  37. Shaun says:

From what i have heard Gta 4 has issues with this graphics card. I’m not sure why, but the graphics card is a good brand, made by Nvidia and its an 8400 not bad. It meets sys. requirements. I would do some googling! Good Luck. I would download and install the latest drivers and then go to your GPU settings.

    Click on Custom frequencies

Set the Core Bus at 585 Mhz

Set the Memory Bus at 465 Mhz

hope this helps … Jot down your frequencies before you do this so you can change them if it makes the problem work. If you graphics card fails for some reason of this you need to remove it start up your pc and then shut it down and pop the PCI card back in … Hopefully this will fix your prob …. good luck once again.

  38. Atif says:

You can contact me to learn that :-)

  39. Atif says:

    :-) thanks sid
