Well a lot of people I have interacted to don’t even know what a computer’s configuration really means. Each time someone asks them about computers configuration I get a prompt reply ” mine is a Pentium 4 !”. Even thought they have an AMD running. How cool is that ! But what about other things, just a Pentium 4 processor doesn’t make a computer running? What is your processor speed ? What is the RAM memory ? What is the Hard Disk space ? Leave alone Video RAM..
So what is a Computer’s Configuration ?
A computers configuration of the specifications of general parts of the CPU ( Central Processing Unit ), to be accurate the RAM, the processor speed, the Hard Disk. The are at least 3 things that are a must for a computer’s configuration to be comprised of.
Why these 3 peripherals are important ?
- That is because these are the only 3 things determine the speed, efficiency and storage od your computers. The processor determines the speed that is how fast your computers is. It is measured in Mega Hertz (Mhz) or Giga Hertz (Ghz). We will see the details later.
- Then comes the RAM (Random Access Memory) which tells you how effecient your computer is. By efficiency I mean that how many applications or programs you can execute simultaneously. It is the temporary memory and is stored in Mega Bytes(MB) or Giga Bytes (GB).
- And your Hard Disk determines the storage that is how much of data (mp3, movies, games and all the stuff) your computer can hold. Even the Hard disk is measured in Mega Bytes(MB) or Giga Bytes (GB).
Wow! How do I know that ?
Knowing your computer’s configuration is very simple. In the first case if you are the one who bought the computer then you must have already know it. Keeping it aside, lets see how you can view the computer’s configuration in Windows XP.

To view the Processor and RAM
Click on the Start Button, then Right click on My Computer on the list and click on Properties and you can see the details under the general tab.

To view the Hard Disk
Click on the Start Button, then click on My Computer. In the new window that appears, just hover the mouse over a drive and a tooltip will show you the storage staats of current drive or in other way out click on each drive to view its storage details on the left size panel.

Um, you know that Hard drives are measured in Gigabytes right? I hope it was a typo that you put MHz, or GHz.

Oh yes that was a typo. Thanks for bringing to notice.
If you don’t feel like checking all that yourself you can just visit one of those sites that check your configuration to tell you if you can run video games (it’s called Canyourunit i think). Choose whatever game and just look at the results – they’ll be a lot easier to read and remember.
