Warning - This tutorial uses overclocking to run GTA 4. Overclocking will usually void the manufacturer warranty for your Video Card. Hence if you don't want to void your warranty of take any damages (by chance) then I urge you to not carry out this method. I take no responsibility for any hardware damages.
Two days ago I wrote a post about the performance of Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA IV) on GeForce 8400 GS
I get an ugly 12 fps and hence I was not able to play the game like all others. The satanic idea of overclocking flicked my mind today so I thought to break the warranty of my 2 month old video card today. To my goodness it worked !! I now get a 22 fps which is enough for me to play the game. Normally a human eye can read up to 16 frames a second so anything more than 16 fps will look normal, so you dont need to wait for 30fps to play the game.
The card is performing almost good with no extra cooling unit required. The temperature of my video card normal ranges between 55-60 °C. Overclocking didn’t affect a lot with current temperature at 64 °C after playing the game for 2 hours. FYI its summer over here and the room temperature is 35 °C.
Okay, install the latest drivers and ntune utility. Now reboot your PC. There’s some overclocking action next.
Go to Start > All Programs > Nvidia Corporation > Nvidia Control Panel > Performance
You get to see something like this hopefully
Click on Adjust GPU Settings on the left panel

Now you get the the over clocking settings on the right. Make the settings like this (thats what I made), don’t make them too high or you might end up burning your video card.
Click on Custom frequencies
Set the Core Bus at 585 Mhz
Set the Memory Bus at 465 Mhz
Click on the test button
Wait for a while till the test is performed. Once the test is successful, click on Apply.

Hold on its not over yet. Now click on Launch Nvidia Monitor Utility.
Frequently keep an eye on your card’s temperature. Launch the game and enjoy.

Im glad vishnu.. Let me know what FPS you get for it
However i wont take any responsibility if you burn your card, mine is Sparkle GeForce 8400GS and I have tried it tilll 595 Mhz
i did know about the overlocking but was afraid to use it ever in my life, since i read ur post i am gonna be confident to try this…
Thanks a ton…
BTW whats your specs,
mine is DDR2 2GB Kingston,
Gigabyte Motherboard with two PCI Slots for SLI
GEforce 8400 SE (Special Edition) 512MB
Core2 Duo 2.4ghz
n lags just the way u described….
Hey abs, make sure you keep monitoring the temperature of your card. (shouldnt go above 75C and never above 80C)
My PC specs are
DDR2 4GB Transcend,
Gigabyte GA-M61PM2-S2
Geforce 8400 SE (512MB w/ turbo cache)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ @ 3.1Ghz
well buddy dint work…
guess whats the temp showing in mine 90 DEGREES!!!!!
and the test fails…
not even 10% more says failed…
my max core bus stays up till 450 MHz
and memory bus to 324 mhz MAXIMUM
and third it does not find anything in the memory information
no text in the box at all..
i think i need to upgrade me RAM size its only 2 gb
Ha, finally! Welcome mr Nico Belic, it’s a pleasure to finally meet you after all this time
Dude, I think you just became a god to all the 8400GS owners
lol thanks..
hi abs, I think its a problem with your cooling system. Who is the manufacturer of your card? XFX ? EVGA ? or any other? XFX usually not give fans to low end cards.
Mine is Sparkle with a fan and pretty much heat sink.
Hi,
Im too scared to do it myself cuz im an amateur and i dont want to destroy my pc. I am using Rivatuner.
well, if you are scared, I suggest you not to try this one because it breaks the warranty as well.
I tried doing what you did , but when I do a test , it says test failed. Any ideas on how to proceed?
yeah, mabe your card cannot handle that frequency.. What manufacturer is it ?
WOW! I got a raise from 540/500 (Core/Mem) > 702/593 (A raise of 30%/19%!) And still max 69 degrees Celsius (156.2 degrees Fahrenheit (love google)). Only once in 60 secs, I see a little artifact in heavy burn programs
can i play resident evil 5 with nvidia 8400se or modern warefaze 2.can it be overclocked.i have intel dg31pr mother board 2 gb ram and core 2 duo 2.66 processor.please help me.
i have nvidia 8400se.can i play resident evil 5 or modern war faze 2 with it.i have core 2 duo 2.66 processor intel DG31PR mother board and 2 GB ram. Please help me!

Fails when i put the memory speed over 390mhz, but like 389 it passes. i can put the core bus at 585mhz. Mine is Sparkle 8400gs 512MB (Same as urs i think? mines not SE)
the fps at the start with no OC was (benchmark) 12.73 fps. although it went up to 15fps alot.
im trying this on GTA: Episodes from liberty city btw.
