The virus problem is really getting worse everyday with new virus code being written.
Linux is better as not much virus are written for it till date but if it is being used as windows, I am sure many virus codes will be written for it too.

Trying to not act like a fanboy here, but its far more difficult to make viruses or find vulnerabilities on linux. Yes, huge security holes have been found but fixed immediately. this is because the community themself find bugs and fix them, sometimes they don't even need to wait for an official fix. and one infected application doesn't compromise the system, that isn't the case on windows. so, even if linux gained control over the market, the number of viruses wouldn't increase significantly.

Then again, I've been using vista on my laptop for the last 2 months and it didn't get infected. I don't use a firewall, and don't let the antivirus sit in the tray and wasting my resources. On XP, I would often get viruses in spite of using firewalls and AVs

Thanks for the explaination Aaron.. In my opinion virus is a program right ? So most of these programs are written for windows just because windows has large number of users. What if we start writing these programs for other operating systems like LINUX or UNIX. Then all the operating systems will be vulnerable.

Please do correct me if I am wrong

Thanks

@Attif
Linux by default is a far more secure system than windows is. Same with Mac's, neither of them have any virii(aside from proof of concept) they can't get infected with adware/spyware etc. Of your list the only ones that will still be a potential threat are numbers 4 and 9.

Hi Sandeep,

Apart from 2 or 3 rest of these are general suggestions to protect any computer.

Can you please let me know how can LINUX/MAC help in such a case ?
